Nigerian National Assembly Proposes Shifting Election Timetable to November 2026

The Nigerian National Assembly has initiated moves to amend the Electoral Act, proposing a significant shift in the election timetable to hold presidential and governorship polls in November 2026 instead of the traditional February/March timeline. The proposed changes are intended to streamline the electoral process, resolve disputes promptly, and allow sufficient time for the swearing-in of newly elected officials before May 29.

The amendments seek to grant lawmakers the power to set election dates, provide INEC with greater flexibility for future adjustments, and introduce reforms for more efficient and credible elections.
