Presidency Defends Electoral Act Amendments Against Opposition

Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Strategy, stated that the recent amendments to the Electoral Act were designed to close loopholes that opposition parties, particularly the ADC and NNPP, sought to exploit. He accused these parties of making unfounded allegations against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC, claiming they were attempting to mislead the public.

Onanuga emphasized that the amendments allow for real-time transmission of election results, using Form EC8A as a backup in case of network failures. He refuted claims that the amendments created new loopholes, asserting that the provisions were clear and aimed at preventing manipulation.

Onanuga also criticized the opposition for their disorganization and inability to adapt to the new electoral framework, which he argued was a significant improvement over previous laws. He concluded that the National Assembly had listened to various stakeholders and the public in enacting these changes, which he believes will enhance Nigeria's democratic process.
