Afenifere Criticizes Nigerian Senate Over Electoral Act Amendments

Afenifere, a prominent Yoruba socio-cultural group, has criticized the Nigerian Senate for allegedly prioritizing political incumbency over democratic integrity. The group, led by Oba Oladipo Olaitan, and jointly signed by its leader and the Public Secretary, Princ Justic Faloy, accused the Senate of betraying the constitution and multiparty democracy.

The Senate's reported rejection of provisions such as the transmission of election results digitally and voter identification has sparked controversy. Afenifere argues that such actions undermine the spirit of the Nigerian constitution and could lead to administrative glitches and non-compliance in future elections.

The group calls for a joint committee to harmonize the differences between the Senate and House of Representatives versions of the Electoral Act amendment bill to ensure a credible and technologically-driven electoral framework for the 2027 general elections.
