Buhari Approved Local Production of New Naira Notes

In a court session held in Abuja, a witness, Chinedu Emer Eneanya, confirmed that former President Muhammadu Buhari approved the local production of redesigned Naira notes in 2022. This testimony is part of the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele, who is facing four counts of disobeying a direct law and causing public injury related to the Naira redesign.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Emefiele, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court heard that Emefiele allegedly violated Section 19 of the CBN Act by approving the printing of 375,520,000 pieces of the N1,000 note without the necessary recommendations from the CBN board and the strict approval of the President.

The case has been adjourned to May 11 for further proceedings.
