Court Fines EFCC N500,000 Over Emefiele Trial Delays

On Tuesday, a high court in Maitama, Abuja, presided over by Judge Hamza Muazu, imposed a cost of N500,000 on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) due to delays in the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele. The court noted the prosecution's failure to produce witnesses, which led to the adjournment of the case.

Emefiele faces 20 amended charges, including criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, and conspiracy to obtain money under false pretenses, related to an alleged misappropriation of N6.23 million from the Guis fund during the 2023 general elections. The prosecution, represented by counsel Abba Moham, cited the absence of Deputy Commissioner of Police Elohor Okpoziakeo as a reason for the delay.

The defense counsel, Matthew Burkaa, opposed further adjournments, arguing that the prosecution had exceeded statutory limits for adjournments. The court ultimately retained discretion to grant adjournments in the interest of justice, with the next hearing set for April 27-28, 2024.
