Emefiele Faces Trial for $6.23 Million Fraud Charges

Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, is currently on trial before Justice Hamza Muazu at the Federal High Court in Abuja for his alleged involvement in a $6.23 million fraud. The trial resumed on Tuesday, where the 14th prosecution witness, Eloho Edwin Okpoziakpo from the Special Fraud Unit, testified that suspects had confessed to withdrawing the funds from the apex bank.
The charges against Emefiele include 20 counts of criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, and conspiracy to obtain money under false pretenses, specifically relating to funds intended for international election observation during the 2023 general elections. The defendants, April 1616 Nigeria Ltd and Architekon Nigeria Ltd, have pleaded not guilty.
Okpoziakpo's testimony revealed that the fraudulent withdrawal was approved by a team during an investigation led by Jim Obaz, appointed by President Bola Tinubu. The case has been adjourned until July 2 for further hearings.
