EU Designates ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox Under DSA

The European Commission has officially designated ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox under the Digital Services Act (DSA), categorizing ChatGPT as a Very Large Online Search Engine (VLOSE) and Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs). This designation is based on their declaration of reaching a minimum of 45 million average monthly users in the EU.

The platforms have until the end of January 2027 to fulfill additional obligations, including conducting risk assessments and implementing measures to mitigate systemic risks related to illegal content, harm to minors, and user well-being. The Commission will gain investigative powers and will share supervisory responsibilities with two national Digital Services Coordinators: Coimisiún na Meán in Ireland for ChatGPT and Reddit, and the Authority for Consumers and Markets in the Netherlands for Roblox.

Henna Virkkunen, the EU Executive Vice-President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, stated that these designations reflect the Commission's commitment to digital accountability and oversight.
