CJN Bans 'Barrister' Title for Lawyers at Supreme Court

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has issued a directive banning lawyers and court officials from using the title "Barrister" as a name prefix during official engagements at the Supreme Court. This memorandum, dated July 13, 2026, and signed by Chief Registrar Kabir Akanbi, is addressed to litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars, and lawyers.

The directive takes immediate effect and is intended to promote professionalism and maintain uniform standards in proceedings at the apex court. The memorandum explicitly states that the use of "Barrister" as a formal prefix in court documents, filings, and official interactions at the Supreme Court is no longer permitted.
