Supreme Court Bans Use of 'Barrister' Prefix for Lawyers

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has issued a directive prohibiting the use of the title "Barrister" as a prefix to names in all official correspondence and engagements. This decision was communicated in an internal memorandum dated July 13, 2026, signed by Mr.

Kabir E. Akanbi, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court.

The memorandum, titled "Prohibition of The Use of The Title Barrister as a Prefix to Names," states that the usage of this title is inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected within the apex court. It instructs all litigation staff, legal practitioners, court registrars, and lawyers to discontinue the use of "Barrister" before their names in all official documents, records, identity materials, and engagements with immediate effect.

Furthermore, Heads of Departments and Unit Heads are tasked with ensuring compliance among their staff with this directive.
