West Africans Reject Military Rule, Says Speaker Abbas

During the opening of the 2026 first ordinary session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas stated that evidence indicates West African citizens reject military rule and prefer democratic governance despite recent setbacks. He addressed the challenges posed by military takeovers in countries like Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which have disrupted democratic governance and prompted international condemnation.

Abbas noted that the decline in voter participation and public confidence in institutions reflects deeper governance challenges rather than a rejection of democracy itself. He stressed that electoral victories alone are insufficient for legitimizing governance, advocating for improved public administration and economic stability.

Abbas called for the ECOWAS Parliament to evolve beyond an advisory body, proposing enhanced legislative authority and greater oversight to strengthen democratic governance in the region. He emphasized the importance of national legislatures in sustaining democratic accountability and fostering citizen representation.
