Barau Jibrin Advocates for Stronger Democracy in West Africa

Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, highlighted the necessity of reinforcing democratic structures across West Africa to tackle the increasing political and security pressures in the region. His remarks were made during the 2026 Voice Nigeria Forum held in Abuja.

Barau stated that a robust democratic system is foundational for governance and essential for improving citizen welfare. He underscored the central role of legislatures in sustaining democracy, providing oversight, and ensuring accountability while upholding constitutional governance.

As the first Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Barau emphasized Nigeria's legislative commitment to strengthening the democratic process, enhancing oversight functions, and promoting policies that encourage national progress. He called for Nigerian lawmakers to collaborate with their counterparts across West Africa to deepen legislative diplomacy and support ECOWAS's integration goals, ultimately aiming to deliver tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
