Ex-Google DeepMind Researcher Warns of AI Threat

Bilal Chughtai, a former research engineer focused on artificial general intelligence safety at Google DeepMind, warned that advanced artificial intelligence could "kill us all," emphasizing that there may be limited time to prevent such outcomes as AI development accelerates. He noted the "staggering" pace of AI advancements since he began in early 2022 and expressed concern that AI companies might soon develop superintelligent systems surpassing human capabilities.

Chughtai highlighted the unresolved challenges of AI alignment, which involves ensuring AI systems behave as intended, and called for better coordination among AI companies to avoid a "manic race" in development. His warnings align with concerns from other AI researchers, including Evan Hubinger from Anthropic, who suggested a greater than 10% chance that AI could lead to human extinction within the next decade.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has also called for a slowdown in AI development, a sentiment echoed by Elon Musk and Sam Altman.
