INEC Reviews Regulations for 2027 Elections Integrity

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a comprehensive technical review of its regulations to align with the Electoral Act 2026, a significant step toward strengthening the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections. The initiative, led by INEC Chairman Prof.

Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, aims to enhance oversight of political parties, improve compliance culture, and reduce pre-election disputes, thereby increasing public confidence in Nigeria's democratic process. A technical workshop was held to review existing frameworks and introduce significant legal operational changes affecting political party administration and compliance obligations.

The review will also address challenges such as opaque party primary membership disputes and weak financial disclosure practices. The workshop, supported by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) and Nigerian legal electoral experts, emphasizes the need for credible elections and aims to develop clearer compliance mechanisms and reporting obligations for political parties nationwide.
