Vice Admiral Gambo Advocates for Military Polo Growth

During a commemorative polo match in Abuja celebrating his 60th birthday, Vice Admiral Gambo, a retired naval chief, called for the expansion of military polo in Nigeria. He noted that polo has deep historical and cultural roots, particularly in northern Nigeria, and is linked to the tradition of horse transport across the Sahara.

Gambo stressed that military cadets' training in equestrian skills is a vital aspect of military ceremonies, including mounted parades. He pointed out that beyond recreation, polo has strong economic potential, which, if properly funded, could create employment opportunities and attract sponsorship and tourism through international competitions.

Gambo revealed that upon leaving office, he established the Nigerian Navy Polo Association to facilitate the development of polo in Nigeria. The event was attended by former Chief of Defence Staff General Lucky Irabor, who praised Gambo's contributions, and Brigadier General Mustapha Onyebecha, among others, who expressed gratitude for Gambo's service to the nation.
