Obasanjo Defends Against Osoba's 2003 Election Claims

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo issued a response to Aremo Olusegun Osoba's claims that he misled leaders of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) during the 2003 General Election. In a letter dated July 23, 2026, Obasanjo refuted Osoba's allegations, which were published in The Legal Observer on July 20, describing them as "farfetched" and filled with inaccuracies.

He asserted that he did not deceive anyone, stating that his political actions were guided by openness and national interest. Obasanjo noted that he engaged in extensive consultations with various political leaders, including those from the South-West, North, and South-East, before joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He recalled his respectful relationship with Chief Abraham Adesanya, despite being told that Yoruba people would not support him. Obasanjo defended his invitation to the AD to join a national government after his election, claiming it was a move for national unity, not weakness.

He also disputed Osoba's account regarding the impeachment of Speaker Ghali Na’Abba, attributing the plot to internal issues within his administration.
