Obasanjo Defends Against Osoba's 2003 Election Claims

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo responded to allegations made by former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, who accused him of deceiving leaders of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) during the political realignments leading to the 2003 general elections. In a letter dated July 23, 2026, Obasanjo asserted that he never misled anyone and that his political engagements were conducted transparently for national unity.

He described Osoba's claims as inaccurate and misleading, emphasizing that key political discussions were handled by senior leaders of Afenifere and the AD, which left Osoba uninformed about significant developments. Obasanjo recalled that influential figures encouraged him to contest the presidency after his release from prison, leading to his eventual decision to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He highlighted his respectful relationship with the late Afenifere leader, Chief Abraham Adesanya, despite political disagreements, asserting that he always presented his case honestly.
