Expert Calls for Reforms to Enhance Nigeria's Healthcare

Professor Chima Ariel Onoka, a public health expert and health system economist, warns that Nigeria cannot achieve universal health coverage (UHC) without significant reforms and strong political commitment. He made these remarks ahead of his scheduled delivery of the 241st inaugural lecture at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) on May 14, 2026.

Onoka highlighted the critical need to reduce poverty and build a productive society, noting that progress remains limited when policies are driven by political convenience rather than factual planning. His lecture, titled "Bridging the Divide: Practical Mandate Quest for Universal Health Coverage," will take place at the Enugu campus in the Ivory Tower.

He stressed that the health system's effectiveness for the poor ultimately tests the nation's conscience. Onoka, who holds an MBBS from UNN and a PhD in health system economics from the University of London, is a fellow of the West African College of Physicians.

He advocates for moving beyond theoretical debates to actively influence reforms that can improve healthcare access for ordinary Nigerians.
