Experts Call for Data-Driven Energy Transition in Nigeria

At a recent stakeholder workshop in Abuja, experts, including Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke and Dr.

Timothy Kelsall, emphasized the necessity of a data-driven energy transition plan for Nigeria. The workshop aimed to bridge the gap between policy ambitions and practical feasibility, highlighting that Nigeria's current energy transition plan, which includes achieving 85% electric vehicle adoption and generating 150 gigawatts of solar electricity by 2060, does not align with the country's technological capacity and infrastructure realities.

Okereke noted the importance of a balanced transition scenario that allows for gradual decarbonization while leveraging Nigeria's natural resources. Kelsall discussed the need for careful planning to ensure that the transition does not disrupt the economy, particularly given Nigeria's status as a major oil producer.

The workshop concluded with a call for coordinated action among political leaders, private sector actors, and civil society organizations to implement necessary reforms and achieve sustainable economic development.
