Families Demand Proof of Life for Detained Coup Plotters

Families of alleged coup plotters in Nigeria are demanding proof of life and a fair trial for their detained relatives. The call comes after the Nigerian military arrested at least 16 military officers, ranging from captain to brigadier general, in October 2025.

This action followed an investigation by the Defence Intelligence Agency into an alleged coup plot uncovered in April 2026. Al Makura, a family member, expressed concern over the lack of communication from authorities regarding the detained officers, stating that multiple attempts to reach out have gone unanswered.

The families are not seeking special treatment but are urging for transparency and due process. In response to the situation, the wives and children of the detained officers have staged protests at the National Assembly in Abuja, demanding either the prosecution of their husbands or their release if found innocent.
