Farmers in Zamfara, Sokoto Pay "Harvest Taxes" to Bandits, Threatening Food Security

Farmers in Zamfara and Sokoto states are facing security challenges as they pay "harvest taxes" to bandits in exchange for access to farmlands. This practice has led to fear among farmers and threatens food supply in the region.

Despite favorable rainfall, persistent attacks have turned farmlands into conflict zones, leaving farmers vulnerable. In Zamfara, farmers in Tsafe LGA reported being forced to pay a portion of their harvest to bandits, with those who refuse facing abduction and intimidation.

In Sokoto, similar conditions prevail, with rising food prices and market shortages due to insecurity. Efforts to sustain military patrols during the harvest period have been deemed inadequate, risking famine in the region.

Additionally, recent kidnappings in Sabo village, Zamfara, have prompted youth to organize defense efforts against bandit attacks.
