FCCPC and NJI Train Judges on Consumer Protection Laws

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) began a three-day training program for judges in Abuja on Tuesday. The initiative aims to enhance judges' understanding of competition and consumer protection laws to better adjudicate consumer issues.

Mr. Tunji Bello, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of FCCPC, highlighted the importance of judicial officers adopting a competitive approach to clarify issues in the market.

The training addresses the complexities arising from technological innovations, digital commerce, and cross-border transactions, which have reshaped market functions. Justice Babatund Adejumo of NJI noted that the training is designed to deepen judicial understanding of the substantive principles of competition law, particularly in light of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) of 2018.

The program also aims to prepare judges for the increasing number of disputes arising from evolving market practices across various sectors of the economy.
