FCT Council Elections Set for February 2027 as Litmus Test

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections, scheduled for February 21, 2027, are anticipated to serve as a litmus test for Nigeria's general elections. Approximately 1.6 million residents will participate across 2,822 polling units to elect 62 councillors and six area council chairmen.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), chaired by Professor Joash Amupitan, has assured voters of a hitch-free electoral process, having conducted mock elections to test new technologies. INEC has emphasized the importance of civic education and voter mobilization, urging citizens to fulfill their civic duties.

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah has called for credible elections, highlighting flaws in the electoral process that hinder Nigeria's democratic progress. The elections are seen as crucial for restoring public confidence in the electoral system, especially following recent controversies surrounding electoral reforms and voter apathy.
