FCT Elections 2026: Low Voter Turnout Amid Security

The accreditation and voting process for the FCT elections concluded in Kuje, Gwagwalada, Bwari, and other areas, with results starting to come in. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) oversaw the elections, deploying biometric voter accreditation systems (BVA) and ensuring a secure environment.

Despite the presence of security personnel and a significant number of registered voters—1.6 million across six area councils—voter turnout was low, particularly in Bwari, where polling units reported minimal participation. For instance, at the Lea Primary School polling unit, only 60 out of 1,911 registered voters cast their votes by 2 PM.

Observers noted a generally orderly process, but many polling units experienced a lack of voter presence compared to previous elections. The elections were conducted under tight security, with restrictions on movement imposed by the FCT police from 6 AM to 6 PM to ensure peaceful conduct.
