INEC's Haruna Surprised by Blame for Low Voter Turnout

Muhammed Haruna, a National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), expressed his surprise regarding the blame placed on INEC for the low voter turnout observed in the recent FCT area council elections. During an interview with Trust TV on Monday, Haruna responded to questions about the elections, which had been criticized for their low participation rates.

He stated that attributing the blame solely to INEC is misdirected, as the commission's primary role is to conduct civic education and inform citizens about the voting process. Haruna highlighted that while INEC encourages voter participation, the ultimate responsibility for mobilizing voters rests with political parties, which often have extensive memberships.

He noted that these parties possess the capacity to engage hundreds of thousands or even millions of voters, thus underscoring the need for them to actively promote turnout.
