FCT Teachers Suspend Strike After Meeting with Wike

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have suspended their planned indefinite strike, which was set to commence on April 20, 2026, due to unmet demands. This decision was announced by Mr.

Abdullahi Shafa, the chairman of the FCT Teachers Union, following an emergency meeting convened to review interventions by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. The minister has approved a monthly commitment of N5 billion to address outstanding needs of the teachers and has pledged to release N2 billion monthly from the FCT Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Additionally, 10 percent of the IGR accrued by area councils will be allocated to settle outstanding entitlements for primary school teachers. The minister also committed to engaging the chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to address vacancies that are preconditions for teacher promotions.

Teachers are expected to resume duties on April 27, and there will be no victimization for participating in the strike.
