FCT Teachers End Strike After ₦5 Billion Intervention

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has suspended its ongoing strike action, which began on April 20, 2026, after receiving a ₦5 billion intervention from the FCT Minister. The announcement was made by the union's chairman, Shafa, during a press conference in Gwagwalada, Abuja.

The decision to suspend the strike was reached during an emergency meeting convened to assess the minister's commitment to resolving the dispute. The minister has approved a monthly financial commitment of ₦5 billion to address teacher welfare and outstanding entitlements.

Additionally, the minister pledged to engage with the chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to address lingering promotion issues affecting teachers. Following the resolution, primary and secondary school teachers in the FCT have been directed to return to the classroom.

Shafa cautioned against any form of victimization of teachers who participated in the strike, emphasizing that the union would not tolerate punitive actions. The NUT leadership commended the solidarity shown by teachers throughout the strike and reaffirmed its commitment to improving their welfare and working conditions.
