Federal Government Praises CBN's Banking Reforms

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commended Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for his reforms and the ongoing bank recapitalization initiative aimed at restoring stability to Nigeria's economy for long-term growth. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu highlighted Cardoso's deliberate policy approach during the inauguration of the Gateway International Airport in Ogun State.

The recapitalization exercise is part of broader macroeconomic reforms, with Cardoso's focus on executing these reforms effectively. The CBN is currently managing the recapitalization of Union Bank, Polaris Bank, and Keystone Bank, although the process is not fully complete due to ongoing legal and regulatory issues.

The CBN is conducting audits to identify material issues within Union Bank, which has led to the removal of its board and senior management, with a decision expected in January 2024. Similar legal hurdles are faced by Polaris Bank and Keystone Bank, which are also under regulatory scrutiny.
