Nigeria Supports US Sanctions on Terrorism Financiers

The Nigerian government has expressed support for the U.S. sanctions imposed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) against Mukhtar Muhammad Adamu and nine Bureau de Change firms, which are alleged to be involved in financing terrorism related to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). This action follows Nigeria's earlier designation of individuals and entities on its sanction list on June 18, 2026.

The sanctions were based on extensive intelligence gathering and financial investigations that indicated these individuals and companies facilitated financial support for ISWAP. The Nigerian Sanction Committee noted that the sanctions list includes individuals such as Ibrahim Yakubu Ogirima and companies like Abbal Bako & Sons Bureau de Change Limited.

The federal government reiterated its commitment to ensuring compliance with sanction obligations and emphasized the importance of freezing assets and reporting suspicious transactions. The government commended the efforts of various agencies involved in the investigation and enforcement of these sanctions.
