Ijaw and Urhobo Protest INEC Interference in Warri

On May 20, 2023, Ijaw and Urhobo communities in Warri, Delta State, staged a peaceful protest demanding that the federal government allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to operate independently. The protest was led by community leaders, including Ogb Ijoh and spokesman Godspow Gbenekama.

They condemned alleged interference by the presidency in the implementation of a Supreme Court order concerning the Warri federal constituency. The protesters carried placards and called for respect for the rule of law, emphasizing that INEC must comply with the Supreme Court's judgment without delay.

They referenced the 1999 Constitution, which states that INEC should not be under presidential control. The protest highlighted concerns over national security and warned against any actions that could disrupt peace in Warri, particularly regarding the new state constituencies created in the area.

The protesters urged INEC to conduct primary elections for political parties in compliance with the Supreme Court's directives.
