Ijaw and Itsekiri Reach Power-Sharing Deal in Warri

Following President Bola Tinubu's intervention, the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic groups have reached a power-sharing agreement regarding the Warri Federal Constituency II. The resolution was finalized during a meeting on June 11, 2023, attended by Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and convened by National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu in Abuja.

The agreement stipulates that the House of Representatives seat will rotate between the Ijaw and Itsekiri ethnic groups, with the Ijaw nation taking the first turn for two consecutive terms. This arrangement aims to ease tensions arising from electoral disputes in the area.

The meeting lasted two hours and included key stakeholders from both ethnic groups, with Ribadu signing on behalf of the federal government. The agreement is seen as a significant step towards maintaining peace and fostering political inclusivity among the ethnic groups in Warri ahead of future electoral contests.
