Nigeria Launches Aircraft Leasing Company to Boost Aviation

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the establishment of the Nigerian Aircraft Leasing Company, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of the nation's aviation sector. This decision was announced by Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, following a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held yesterday.

The initiative involves creating a private sector-led special purpose vehicle (SPV) backed by the federal government, designed to provide sustainable access to aircraft for domestic and regional airline operations. Keyamo stated that the leasing company will fundamentally reshape aircraft acquisition in Nigeria and across Africa, offering a centralized, sovereign-backed platform for airlines to access modern fleets.

This new leasing framework is expected to enhance fleet access for Nigerian carriers, allowing them to acquire aircraft through a credible government-backed entity, thus eliminating long-standing challenges faced by Nigerian airlines in accessing aircraft. The initiative aims to strengthen local airlines' ability to efficiently service domestic routes and reduce flight cancellations and delays, ultimately empowering them to better compete in the international aviation market.
