Nigeria's Federal Government Upgrades Four Key Ports

The Federal Government has approved the upgrade of four ports: Onne Port in Rivers State, Rivers Port, Delta Port, and Calabar Port in Cross River State. Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, announced this approval, which complements previous plans for the modernization of Apapa and Tin Can Island ports in Lagos.

The initiative aims to expand Nigeria's port infrastructure, create alternative gateways for trade, and enhance cargo movement efficiency. Oyetola emphasized that modernizing ports outside Lagos would alleviate cargo traffic concentration in the region.

The government is also developing several new deep-sea ports, including the Ibom Deep Seaport, Bakassi Deep Seaport, Agge Deep Seaport, Gateway Deep Seaport, Ondo Deep Seaport, and Bonny Deep Seaport. This comprehensive approach is designed to increase capacity for rising trade volumes and establish Nigeria as a significant maritime hub in Africa.

The minister stated that the integration of ports with transport networks would reduce logistics costs and improve supply chain predictability.
