Nigeria Launches Major Seaport Upgrade Initiative

The Nigerian federal government is initiating a comprehensive seaport modernization program, the largest in over 50 years, to upgrade six major ports: Apapa, Tin Can Island, Onne Port, Rivers Port, Calabar Port, and Warri Port. Dr Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, announced this initiative on September 24, 2026, during the Transport Industry Summit organized by the Transport Correspondents Association of Nigeria (TCAN) in Lagos.

The program, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to reduce cargo-handling delays, lower logistics costs, and enhance trade competitiveness. Key components of the modernization include reconstructing quay walls, deepening port channels for larger vessels, replacing outdated cargo-handling equipment, and further digitalizing terminal operations.

Oyetola emphasized that improved port efficiency is crucial for the entire transport chain, affecting manufacturers, exporters, and consumers. The initiative is expected to yield shorter vessel turnaround times and a more competitive trading environment.

Additionally, the removal of the U.S. Coast Guard's Conditions of Entry on Nigerian vessels in August 2026 marks a significant improvement in port security compliance.
