Federal Government Arraigns Nine Suspects Over Yelwata Massacre in Benue

The Federal Government has taken legal action by arraigning nine suspects linked to the June 2025 massacre in Yelwata, Benue State, where scores were killed and hundreds displaced. The suspects, including Joyce Abdul Malik, appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja, facing 57 counts of charges.

The arraignment was led by the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi SAN. The charges include murder, terrorism, and unlawful possession of arms.

The suspects were brought to court amidst heavy security presence. The arraignment follows a painstaking investigation involving collaboration among relevant security and justice sector agencies.

The Yelwata community was attacked by unidentified gunmen in June 2025, resulting in numerous deaths and displacements, triggering widespread condemnation and protests in Benue State. Following the killings, President Tinubu visited the state capital, Makurdi, and ordered security agencies to apprehend the masterminds during a stakeholder meeting at the Benue Government House.
