Akume Advocates for NIMC's Role in Nigeria's Digital Economy

On September 16, 2026, Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, emphasized the importance of Nigeria's expanding digital identity infrastructure in strengthening the nation's position within Africa's digital economy. Speaking at the National Day of Identity 2026, Akume noted that the progress made by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is a significant achievement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration.

He highlighted the enactment of the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, which provides a robust legal framework for identity management, enhances data protection, and establishes NIMC as Nigeria's root certification authority for identity. Akume praised the innovations introduced by NIMC, such as NINAuth and self-service data modification, which facilitate identity verification for Nigerians.
