NIMC Confirms Local Hosting of Nigeria's Identity Database

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) of Nigeria stated that its national identity database is hosted entirely within Nigeria and managed by NIMC employees. Alvan Ikoku, director of NIMC’s Strategic Programme Office, made this announcement during a media briefing, addressing concerns about the storage and control of Nigerians' identity data.
Ikoku emphasized that NIMC has never hosted its identity data outside Nigeria and does not utilize cloud hosting for its core database. He also mentioned that the commission has disaster recovery systems in place to ensure service continuity during system failures.
As of September 2026, 142 million Nigerians have registered for National Identification Numbers. Ikoku highlighted that while local hosting is crucial, effective controls over data access and accountability for misuse are equally important.
NIMC maintains its core database internally and subjects its database management employees to scrutiny by security agencies, with legal consequences for misconduct.
