Federal Government Launches Skills Training for 777 Youths
The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, initiated technical and vocational skills training for 777 young Nigerians in Abuja as part of the third cohort of the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project. The launch took place at the Abuja Trade and Convention Centre, involving seven accredited Training Service Providers (TSPs) in the Federal Capital Territory.
Funded by the World Bank, the project aims to improve access to quality technical and vocational education, strengthen skills delivery institutions, and enhance labor market outcomes for youth. Approximately 80,000 young Nigerians are being trained nationwide across various cohorts.
The current cohort focuses on competency-based training aligned with National Skills Qualification standards, followed by industry internships and employment support. Areas of training include digital media, beauty, construction, and agriculture.
Prof. Adesoji Adesugba emphasized the need for competence over mere certification, while Builder Lawrence Gabriel noted the importance of competency assessments for National Skills Qualification certification.
