FG charts new path for climate-smart agribusiness

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has launched a new initiative to promote climate-smart agribusiness. The partnership, known as the Climate Information Services (CIS) initiative, aims to provide timely and reliable climate information to farmers to help them adapt to extreme weather conditions and improve their agricultural practices.

Key figures such as IFAD Country Director Dede Ekoue and NiMet Professor Charles Anosike emphasized the importance of climate data integration in national development and highlighted the recent launch of the Enhancing National Climate Services (ENACTS) Maproom digital tool. The initiative seeks to embed climate resilience across the agricultural value chain, with a focus on smallholder farmers who form the backbone of Nigeria's food system.

The project, supported by IFAD, aims to enhance food system resilience, expand financial inclusion for smallholder farmers, and leverage digital innovation and private sector partnerships to address the challenges.
