Kano's New Substations Boost Power Supply by 544MW
The Federal Ministry of Power, in collaboration with the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Kano State Government, has commissioned four transmission substations in Kano, significantly enhancing the region's electricity supply. The new substations, located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi, add a total of 544MW of wheeling capacity to the grid.
The Walalambe substation introduces an 80 MW capacity with two 40 MVA transformers, while Kumbotso receives 300 MVA at the 330kV level and 100 MVA transformers. Both Dakata and Dan-Agundi gain an additional 100 MVA transformer at the 132kV level.
This infrastructure improvement aims to strengthen bulk electricity supply to Kano's industrial, commercial, and residential areas, alleviate overloaded substations, and address previously suppressed demand. Notably, Lee Group has been reconnected to the grid after over 30 years of operating off-grid.
The projects align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to reset the power sector and foster national development.
