Federal Government Boosts Kano Power Grid Capacity by 544MW

The federal government has added 544 megawatts of wheeling capacity to the Kano power grid by commissioning four transmission substations in the state. The Federal Ministry of Power, in collaboration with the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Kano State government, oversaw the projects.
The new capacity is distributed across Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi. Specifically, an 80MW substation was commissioned at Walalambe with two 40MVA transformers, while Kumbotso received 300MVA capacity at the 330kV level and 100MVA transformers.
Dakata and Dan-Agundi each gained an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level. The Ministry stated that these projects would enhance bulk electricity supply to various sectors in Kano, alleviate pressure on overloaded substations, and accommodate previously suppressed demand.
Notably, Lee Group has been reconnected to the national grid after over 30 years off-grid. The investments align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to strengthen infrastructure for economic opportunities.
