FG and Cross River State Collaborate on Mining Safety

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in partnership with Cross River State, is taking steps to sanitize mining activities within the state. Ememobong Essien, representing the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NNRA), announced the agency's readiness to collaborate with the state government to standardize and sanitize mining operations.

This initiative aims to enhance safety oversight in the extractive industry, particularly concerning naturally occurring radioactive materials that may be unearthed during mining exploration. Essien emphasized the need for synergy in monitoring mining operations to prevent health risks associated with these materials.

The partnership will ensure that mining operations in Cross River adhere to international safety standards, protecting the environment and the health of host communities. Effiom Ekaha Otu, the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, confirmed the state government's commitment to sanitizing the mining sector and ensuring compliance with federal regulations.

The state government, led by Governor Bassey Otu, is prioritizing the protection of its ecosystem and population from hazardous substances linked to unregulated mining practices.
