FG Denies Oyedele's Admission of Tax Law Errors

The Federal Government of Nigeria has refuted claims that the Minister of State for Finance, Oyedele, acknowledged mistakes in the recently introduced tax laws. The Fiscal Policy Tax Reform Committee issued a statement on Sunday, asserting that the minister's comments were misrepresented, creating a misleading impression among Nigerians. The committee urged the public to await the outcome of a legislative investigation into the tax reform process. They referenced a certified gazette copy of the law released to the National Assembly in early January 2026. The committee noted that during a recent discussion at the Nigerian Bar Association's Legal Practice Conference in Lagos, the minister highlighted the positive outcomes of the new tax system, which aims to increase the number of Nigerians captured in the tax net from 10 million to 100 million. The reform is designed to support small businesses and low-income earners, with provisions for tax exemptions on essential needs. The committee also introduced a tax ombudsman to protect taxpayers and emphasized the importance of relying on verified information from official channels.
