Taiwo Oyedele Admits Errors in Nigeria's New Tax Laws

Taiwo Oyedele, during a fireside chat at the 2026 annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), admitted to errors in the new tax laws. He stated that inconsistencies arose during the legislative process due to procedural lapses.

Oyedele urged Nigerians to await the outcome of a legislative probe into alleged discrepancies highlighted in social media posts. He acknowledged that errors occurred due to a manual process involving multiple stages of review.

To address these issues, he proposed a financial bill aimed at ensuring transparency and reliability in the legislative process, with every version of the law made publicly available. Oyedele stressed that the enforcement of tax reform should not be arbitrary and highlighted the importance of understanding the rationale behind tax laws.

He noted that the new reform is designed to encourage formal business practices and reduce discretionary practices in tax administration. Additionally, he called for improved revenue utilization, as Nigeria lags behind other countries in tax collection performance.

Abdussamad Dasuki, a member of the House of Representatives from Sokoto State, raised concerns about discrepancies in the gazetted version of the tax law passed on December 17, 2025, prompting the House to set up a special committee for review.
