FG and ICEED Advocate for Clean Cooking Investment in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the International Centre for Energy and Environmental Development (ICEED), is urging for greater investment in the clean cooking sector. This initiative was discussed during a workshop held at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja, where Ewah Eleri, Executive Director of ICEED, emphasized the potential of the clean cooking sector to advance public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development.

Eleri pointed out that a significant proportion of Nigerian households rely on solid biomass for cooking, contributing to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, necessitating urgent intervention. Dr.

Iniobong Abiola, Director of the Department of Climate Change at the Federal Ministry of Environment, described the clean cooking energy issue as a critical link to climate action and public health. The workshop identified financial barriers as a major obstacle to the adoption of clean cooking technologies and stressed the importance of partnerships among government, development partners, financial institutions, and civil society to mobilize carbon finance and improve access to climate finance.
