FG Launches National Textbook Ranking System for Schools

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the introduction of a national textbook ranking system for primary, junior, and senior secondary schools. This initiative was unveiled by the Minister of Education, Dr.

Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaba Sai D.

Ahmad. The new framework aims to halt the unchecked proliferation of textbooks in schools and ensure that high-quality, curriculum-compliant materials are used in classrooms.

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will retain its statutory role in approving textbooks and will further rank them through a rigorous national evaluation process. This ranking will determine the suitability and quality of textbooks at various educational levels.

The government has declared that textbooks not ranked under this new system will be barred from classrooms, regardless of their previous licensing status. This initiative is set to take effect in the 2026 academic session, with policies backing nationwide sensitization efforts to ensure compliance among key stakeholders.
