Nigeria Launches National Textbook Ranking System for Schools

The Federal Government of Nigeria announced the introduction of a national textbook ranking system aimed at enhancing the quality assurance and standardization of educational materials in primary, junior, and senior secondary schools across the country. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to address the proliferation of textbooks and ensure that learning materials comply with approved curricula.

According to a statement by Boriowo Folasad, Director of Press and Public Relations, the initiative was disclosed by Minister of Education Maruf Tunji Alausa and Minister of State for Education Professor Suiwaba Sai D. Ahmad.

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will oversee the approval and ranking of textbooks, establishing subject committees to evaluate submissions based on defined academic and pedagogical standards. The new ranking system is expected to significantly reduce the excess number of textbooks currently in circulation, which often confuses teachers, students, and parents.

The implementation of this system will begin in the academic session starting September 2026.
