Nigeria Issues Digital IDs to 1.9 Million Students

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a nationwide learner identification number system, issuing digital learner IDs to 1.9 million candidates registered for the 2026 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations. This initiative, announced by the Federal Ministry of Education, aims to assign every student a permanent, traceable academic identity to support continuous learning and improve educational planning.

Dr. Maruf Alausa, the Minister of Education, described this reform as a key milestone in transforming the education sector, aligning with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda focused on human capital development.

The first phase of the rollout represents a significant step in strengthening educational data management and improving the integrity of public examinations. The unique identification numbers will enable tracking of academic progress and ensure that educational records remain consistent, even if students change schools.

The next phase will extend the identification system to learners in public and private schools nationwide.
