Nigeria Launches Digital Postcode System for Buildings

The Federal Government of Nigeria launched a nationwide digital postcode system aimed at assigning unique address codes to every building in the country. This initiative, announced during a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in Abuja on a Friday, seeks to integrate the postcode system with the National Identification Number (NIN) database.

Abisoy Coker, Director General of NIMC, stated that this integration will enhance address verification and facilitate easier access to government and private sector services. The system will allow Nigerians to confirm their addresses through a single trusted platform, improving the reliability of individual location information.

Tola Odeyemi, Postmaster General of NIPOST, described the project as a long-awaited solution to Nigeria's address challenges, emphasizing its potential to enhance logistics, emergency response, urban planning, and public service access.
