Nigeria Launches N20 Million National Laureate Prize

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the establishment of the National Laureate Prize, a new annual program with a budget of N20 million, designed to reward exceptional academic research projects by undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students in the country. This initiative, disclosed in a statement by the Federal Ministry of Education's Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasad, aims to encourage academic excellence and innovation among students.

The Minister of Education, Maruf Olatunji Alausa, emphasized that the program seeks to reshape Nigeria's educational landscape by incentivizing scholarly achievements and placing research at the forefront of national development. The initiative will transform students' approach to final year projects, encouraging them to address real-world problems rather than merely fulfilling graduation requirements.

The selection process for winners will involve a thorough review of research outputs from Nigeria's 298 tertiary institutions, although specific details on the selection criteria have not been disclosed. The government also plans to tackle issues related to certification fraud through the establishment of a digital repository for academic records.
