FG Links Birth Registration to School Enrollment in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a strategic partnership between the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Population Commission to integrate birth registration with school enrollment. This initiative, detailed in a statement issued on Tuesday via X, emphasizes the importance of credible population data for rationalizing school site selection, balancing teacher deployment, and ensuring equitable resource allocation.

Dr. Olatunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, highlighted that integrating birth registration into the admission process would promote proper placement and strengthen academic records.

The initiative aims to expand nationwide access to registration services to avoid unintended barriers for families. Aminu Yusuf, Chairman of the National Population Commission, reaffirmed the commission's mandate to maintain Nigeria's civil registration and vital statistics system, noting that there are currently 4,000 registration centers operating nationwide, with ongoing digital upgrades.

The partnership aims to establish a joint technical working group to harmonize verification procedures and ensure database interoperability, reinforcing the federal government's commitment to evidence-based educational reform.
